HR screened his r\u00e9sum\u00e9, and that\u2019s when everything went sideways. I saw no degree, inflated experience, and dates that straight-up didn\u2019t add up. I had to be professional and tell him we couldn\u2019t move forward with his application. Man, he cornered me in the hallway, panicked, practically begging me to \u201cfigure it out\u201d somehow with HR. I stayed firm, and he snapped, calling me a fake friend. I was stunned.<\/p>\n
The next morning, we both went to the HR office, and before I could even speak, he dropped the real reason he was so desperate: his uncle, Darren, helped him \u201cfix up\u201d that r\u00e9sum\u00e9. According to Gregor, Darren told him that exaggerating experience was normal and claiming a degree was \u201cjust how you get your foot in the door.\u201d He wasn\u2019t making up lies on his own; he was just following a manipulative family member\u2019s terrible advice.<\/p>\n
But anyway, a lie is still a lie. He told everyone I didn\u2019t help him get a job, and now everyone is on my back. They\u2019re telling me that hiring him wouldn\u2019t have hurt anyone and that I humiliated him. I can\u2019t stop asking myself: was I holding him accountable for his actions\u2026 or was I punishing him for trusting the wrong person? What would you do if you were in my shoes?<\/p>\n
I know I need to separate the person from the action. Gregor messed up, but he isn\u2019t a villain. I have to keep the lines clear: \u201cI can\u2019t hire you\u201d isn\u2019t the same as \u201cI don\u2019t love you.\u201d I\u2019m trying to speak my truth calmly, but it\u2019s hard when I\u2019m being dragged into emotional attacks. I\u2019m running a team, not a charity, and if I start hiring people just to avoid social tension, I\u2019ll regret it later.
