My MIL blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh,\u201d I said cheerfully, handing her a printed sheet, \u201cwe\u2019re doing things potluck-style from now on. Since everyone loves coming out here, we figured everyone can contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n

The paper had categories:<\/p>\n

Meat & mains<\/p>\n

Sides<\/p>\n

Drinks<\/p>\n

Desserts<\/p>\n

Cleanup crew (rotating shifts)<\/p>\n

Under \u201cCleanup Crew \u2013 Friday,\u201d I had written her name.<\/p>\n

Her daughters stared at the list. One of them actually laughed, thinking it was a joke.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a joke,\u201d my husband said calmly from behind me. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to host. But we\u2019re not funding and cleaning up an entire weekend by ourselves anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

The kids were already running around the yard. The adults, however, looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t bring anything,\u201d my MIL said stiffly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI figured,\u201d I replied. \u201cThere\u2019s a grocery list on the counter. We\u2019ll start grilling when you get back.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, she didn\u2019t march into my kitchen rearranging things. Instead, the three of them piled back into their SUV and drove to the store.<\/p>\n

That weekend was\u2026 different.<\/p>\n

They cooked. They set tables. They picked up trash. My MIL tried to give me instructions once, but I gently handed her the tongs and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n

By Sunday afternoon, as they were packing up, my MIL hesitated by the porch.<\/p>\n
