They all turned their heads toward my mom, wearing practiced looks of panic and distress, waiting for her to say the magic words: “It’s okay, I’ll put it on my card.”<\/i><\/p>\n
The waiter stood there awkwardly, the heavy leather bill folder hovering in the air. The total was undoubtedly massive\u2014lobster and aged steaks aren’t cheap.<\/p>\n
My mom didn\u2019t reach for her purse. She didn’t even look up from her dessert. She just took a calm, deliberate sip of her coffee and said, \u201cOh, that is unfortunate.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
The silence stretched out. The MIL\u2019s eyes widened a fraction. \u201cWell… we can\u2019t possibly leave the bill unpaid, can we? It would be so embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt certainly would be,\u201d my mom agreed cheerfully.<\/p>\n
The SIL, trying to force the issue, added, \u201cI\u2019d run out to get mine, but this call is urgent<\/i>. Surely you can cover us just this once, and we\u2019ll Venmo you?\u201d<\/p>\n
My mom finally set her cup down and smiled that same sweet smile she gave me before she left. She turned to the waiter.<\/p>\n

The in-laws let out a collective sigh of relief. The MIL even chuckled, \u201cOh, thank you, dear! You\u2019re a lifesaver.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the waiter didn\u2019t hand the folder to my mom. Instead, he pulled a small, crisp slip of paper from his apron pocket and placed it gently next to my mom\u2019s coffee cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere is your receipt, ma\u2019am,\u201d the waiter said. \u201cPaid in full.\u201d<\/p>\n
The table went dead silent.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d the FIL sputtered. \u201cPaid?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d my mom said, standing up and smoothing her dress. \u201cWhen I arrived early, I asked the waiter to open a separate tab just for me. I paid for my salad and my pasta before the appetizers even hit the table. I knew you all had a history of… memory loss… regarding your wallets, so I didn’t want to complicate things.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
She grabbed her purse and patted the MIL on the shoulder.<\/p>\n

She walked out the front door, leaving them to explain to the manager why three wealthy adults couldn’t pay for their own lobster.<\/p>\n
