I froze.<\/p>\n

Slowly, I turned around.<\/p>\n

My husband was standing in the hallway. Perfectly still. Just\u2026 staring.<\/p>\n

\u201cToby?\u201d he said softly. \u201cWho are you talking to?\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart pounded. \u201cHe called me. He said you were acting strange.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband frowned. \u201cI\u2019ve been asleep in our room. I just woke up because I heard you come in.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked back at Toby. He was shaking his head violently.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he whispered. \u201cThat\u2019s not him.\u201d<\/p>\n

A chill crawled up my spine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I asked, kneeling beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other New Dad woke up,\u201d Toby said, clutching my shirt. \u201cHe came into my room. He was smiling but\u2026 not with his eyes. He said not to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The air felt heavy.<\/p>\n

I turned back to my husband. He looked confused\u2014concerned, even. \u201cThere is no \u2018other\u2019 me,\u201d he said carefully.<\/p>\n

Just then, we heard it.<\/p>\n

A floorboard creaked.<\/p>\n

Not from the hallway.<\/p>\n

From upstairs.<\/p>\n

All three of us slowly looked toward the staircase.<\/p>\n

My husband swallowed. \u201cWe\u2019ve been down here this whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another creak. Slow. Deliberate.<\/p>\n

Toby buried his face in my chest. \u201cThat\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband grabbed the fireplace poker and motioned for me to stay behind him. We moved toward the stairs together, each step heavier than the last.<\/p>\n

Halfway up, the house went silent again.<\/p>\n

Too silent.<\/p>\n

At the top of the stairs, the bedroom door stood slightly open.<\/p>\n

But we had left it closed.<\/p>\n

My husband pushed it open with the poker.<\/p>\n

The room was empty.<\/p>\n

The bed was untouched.<\/p>\n

The window, however, was wide open. Curtains fluttering in the wind.<\/p>\n

And on the floor beneath the window\u2026 muddy footprints.<\/p>\n

Bare footprints.<\/p>\n

Leading from the window.<\/p>\n

Into the hallway.<\/p>\n

And stopping right outside Toby\u2019s bedroom door.<\/p>\n

I felt my stomach drop.<\/p>\n

My husband turned pale. \u201cCall the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minutes later, flashing red and blue lights filled the street. Officers searched the house and the yard. They found more footprints outside beneath the window\u2014leading into the woods behind our property.<\/p>\n

No one was caught.<\/p>\n

The police said it was likely a break-in. Someone must have been inside the house while my husband slept. Watching. Waiting.<\/p>\n

But Toby refused to sleep alone for weeks.<\/p>\n

And sometimes, late at night, he would whisper:<\/p>\n

We installed cameras after that.<\/p>\n

The first night they were up, I couldn\u2019t sleep. Around 3:17 a.m., my phone buzzed with a motion alert.<\/p>\n

I opened the app.<\/p>\n

The room was dark.<\/p>\n

Empty.<\/p>\n

Then, slowly, from behind the couch\u2014<\/p>\n

A man stood up.<\/p>\n
