Apparently, she\u2019d recently told my dad that since they now had two daughters, it would be \u201cfair\u201d for the necklace to become a family heirloom for all<\/em> the girls. She said it wasn\u2019t right that I was \u201choarding\u201d everything when my sisters would grow up without anything from their grandmother.<\/p>\n I was stunned.<\/p>\n My mom\u2019s mother \u2014 my grandmother \u2014 is still alive. The necklace wasn\u2019t some ancient family artifact from my dad\u2019s side. It was my mom\u2019s. And she had made it clear she wanted her things to go to me.<\/p>\n Dad said he understood that, but his fianc\u00e9e felt strongly. She thought maybe I could \u201cgift\u201d the necklace to one of the girls when they turned 18. Apparently, my dad\u2019s fianc\u00e9e had reached out to her directly, trying to arrange a visit \u201cto look through old keepsakes.\u201d Thankfully, my grandmother shut it down immediately.<\/p>\n After that, I drove to my grandparents\u2019 house and picked everything up myself. I moved it into a safety deposit box in my name only.<\/p>\n When I told my dad, he was quiet.<\/p>\n Then he said, \u201cI guess I should\u2019ve known better than to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n Maybe he should have.<\/p>\n I love my sisters. This isn\u2019t about them. But my mother died when I was twelve. Those are the only tangible pieces of her I have left.
