He looks like a grown man.<\/p>\n
Sometimes strangers at the grocery store glance at him and assume he’s eighteen or nineteen.<\/p>\n
But last night, he reminded me that looking like a man and being ready to live like one are two very different things.<\/p>\n
He had finished dinner and was supposed to wash the dishes.<\/p>\n
Instead, he looked at the sink and sighed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do I have to do dishes?\u201d<\/p>\n
I was tired.<\/p>\n
I’d worked all day.<\/p>\n
I’d cooked dinner.<\/p>\n
I’d cleaned the kitchen.<\/p>\n
And I’d reminded him three times already.<\/p>\n
Then he slammed his plate into the sink.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if you’re lucky enough to find a partner someday, that person shouldn’t become your replacement parent.\u201d<\/p>\n
His expression changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should be an equal partner.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot someone who expects another person to cook for him, clean for him, organize his life, and pick up after him.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stayed quiet.<\/p>\n
I pointed at the sink.<\/p>\n

I held up another finger.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou will know how to clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you will know how to carry your own weight.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stared at me.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at the dishes.<\/p>\n
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n
Finally, he picked up the sponge.<\/p>\n
He turned on the water.<\/p>\n
And started washing.<\/p>\n
I didn’t say anything.<\/p>\n
I walked back to the table.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later, I heard him ask,<\/p>\n

Not because he needed to become a chef.<\/p>\n
Because someday, he might be living alone.<\/p>\n
Someday, he might be responsible for someone besides himself.<\/p>\n
And I want him prepared.<\/p>\n
A few weeks later, he surprised me.<\/p>\n
I came home from work one evening and found dinner already on the table.<\/p>\n
Nothing fancy.<\/p>\n
Chicken.<\/p>\n
Rice.<\/p>\n
Vegetables.<\/p>\n
The kitchen wasn’t perfect.<\/p>\n
But it was clean.<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI figured I’d try.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parenting isn’t about making our children dependent on us.<\/p>\n
It’s about making ourselves unnecessary.<\/p>\n
We teach them to tie their shoes because someday we won’t be there to tie them.<\/p>\n
We teach them to cross the street because someday they’ll walk without us.<\/p>\n
We teach them to make decisions because someday we’ll have to let them make their own.<\/p>\n
And we teach them to cook, clean, work, communicate, and take responsibility because someday they’ll have a life of their own.<\/p>\n
My son doesn’t need to be perfect.<\/p>\n
He’s fourteen.<\/p>\n
He’s going to complain.<\/p>\n
He’s going to forget things.<\/p>\n
He’s going to slam a cabinet occasionally.<\/p>\n
He’s going to make mistakes.<\/p>\n
That’s part of growing up.<\/p>\n
But I refuse to let him confuse being loved with being served.<\/p>\n
I want him to understand that independence isn’t about never needing anyone.<\/p>\n
It’s about being capable of taking care of yourself while still knowing how to care for others.<\/p>\n
So yes, my 14-year-old son is 6’1″.<\/p>\n
He looks like a grown man.<\/p>\n
But every night, when he walks into that kitchen and washes his own plate, I see something more important than his height.<\/p>\n
I see a boy learning how to become a man.<\/p>\n
And that’s exactly what I’m raising him to be.<\/p>\n
Not someone who expects to be served.<\/p>\n
