First, a swarm of over fifty crimson helium balloons shot upward toward the reception hall’s vaulted glass ceiling. Dangling from the ribbon of every single balloon was a high-gloss, 8×10 photograph.

Second, a hidden, high-powered Bluetooth speaker nestled in the base of the box roared to life.

The room, already dead silent from Lena’s scream, was suddenly filled with Lena’s own voice echoing off the marble floors.

“…I mean, Tony’s completely clueless,” the recorded voice laughed. It was crisp, clear, and unmistakably her. “He thinks I actually want to play stepmom to those brats. Please. I just need him to finalize the paperwork on the Aspen cabin and the joint accounts. I give it two years tops before I take half and run.”

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. I stood near the back, a serene smile resting on my face as I sipped my champagne.

Above us, the balloons hit the ceiling, but the photos dangled perfectly at eye level for the guests on the balcony, and slowly drifted over the main floor. They weren’t just financial documents. I had hired a private investigator the moment Tony had demanded I sign a lopsided alimony agreement to “protect his new future.”

The investigator had found more than hidden assets. He found Marcus.

One of the balloons drifted down near the head table. Tony, his face drained of all color, reached out with trembling hands and snatched the photograph. It was a crystal-clear shot of his beautiful new bride, in her wedding dress during her “fitting” three weeks prior, passionately kissing Marcus—Tony’s own younger brother and the best man, who was currently standing frozen just two feet away.

“Lena…” Tony choked out, staring at the photo, then looking at his brother. “What… what is this?”

“It’s a deepfake!” Lena shrieked, her sweet, carefully curated facade entirely shattered. She lunged for the speaker, her heavy satin dress catching on a chair and sending her crashing to her knees. “Turn it off! Someone turn it off!”

But the speaker was locked inside a welded steel mesh cage at the bottom of the box.

“Marcus is just… fun,” the recording continued, the audio shifting to a phone call she’d made from her car, captured on her own dashcam that I had legally subpoenaed during the divorce and kept a copy of. “Tony’s the bank. Marcus is the entertainment. It’s the perfect setup.”

Tony dropped the photograph. He didn’t yell. He didn’t cry. He just turned and stared at his brother. Marcus took one look at Tony’s face, dropped his champagne glass, and sprinted for the exit doors.

The chaos that erupted was a symphony. The caterers stopped serving. Tony’s mother burst into tears. Lena was screaming on the floor, frantically trying to yank down balloons that were hopelessly out of reach, her flawless makeup running down her face in dark, jagged lines.

Tony finally turned to look at me through the crowd. His eyes were wide, pleading, filled with a sudden, devastating realization of what he had thrown away, and what he had anchored himself to.

I gave him a small, polite wave.

I set my half-empty champagne flute on a passing waiter’s tray, turned to my two teenagers—who were old enough to know exactly why we were there and had watched the entire spectacle with quiet satisfaction—and gestured toward the door.

“Come on, guys,” I said gently. “I think the entertainment is over. Let’s go get pizza.”

As we walked out into the cool evening air, leaving the screaming and crying behind us, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Lena had said we could still be friends. And friends, after all, always give the most unforgettable wedding gifts.

The sides of the massive, custom-wrapped box suddenly collapsed outward with a heavy thud, taking the beautiful silver wrapping paper with them.
