My chest tightened \u2014 not with jealousy this time, but with something else.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the promotion?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I have to compromise who I am to get it,\u201d he said, \u201cthen I don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I let out a breath I didn\u2019t realize I\u2019d been holding.<\/p>\n
