I looked around wildly. The couch cushions were on the floor. The coffee table was upside down. There were cardboard boxes everywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cEllen?\u201d I croaked.<\/p>\n

She jumped and spun around. \u201cWHAT are you doing here?!\u201d<\/p>\n

That was not the reaction I was hoping for.<\/p>\n

Ellen blinked.<\/p>\n

Not nervous laughter. Not guilty laughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait,\u201d she said between gasps, \u201cCynthia? Red hair? Talks really loud?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God.\u201d She covered her face. \u201cShe\u2019s my cousin.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart skipped. \u201cYour cousin?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes! I asked her to help me pull this off.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stepped aside dramatically and gestured around the room.<\/p>\n

The boxes. The tools. The mess.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been remodeling your home office,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re always complaining about how cramped it feels. I wanted to surprise you. New desk. Built-in shelves. Fresh paint. The works.\u201d<\/p>\n

I just stood there.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the \u2018in pieces\u2019 part?\u201d I asked carefully.<\/p>\n

She grinned. \u201cYour old desk. We couldn\u2019t get it through the doorway. Cynthia said we\u2019d have to take it apart and that you\u2019d \u2018be in pieces\u2019 when you saw what we\u2019d done to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She walked over, grabbed my hand, and pulled me toward the hallway.<\/p>\n

I did.<\/p>\n

She guided me forward, opened the door, and said, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I opened them, I forgot how to breathe all over again\u2014but for a completely different reason.<\/p>\n

My cramped, cluttered office was gone.<\/p>\n

In its place was a bright, clean space with dark wood shelves, framed photos of us, soft lighting, and a massive desk perfectly positioned by the window.<\/p>\n

On the wall above it, she had hung a framed quote:<\/p>\n

\u201cBuild the life you want to come home to.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt my throat tighten.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou flew back early because you thought I was\u2026\u201d she trailed off gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to think,\u201d I admitted. \u201cIt just sounded\u2026 bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

She walked up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist.<\/p>\n

I hugged her tighter than I had in a long time.<\/p>\n
