I grew up poor, the eldest of several siblings, and spent my childhood playing \u201cmom #2.\u201d I changed diapers, cooked meals, and missed out on friendships because someone had to babysit. That experience shaped me\u2014I decided early on I never wanted kids. I\u2019ve lived that life already, and I want something different. I want freedom, peace, and a future that\u2019s mine. I\u2019m not selfish. I\u2019m just done sacrificing my identity for someone else\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n
Now I\u2019m in my mid-20s, living with my boyfriend. He\u2019s funny, kind, and we connect deeply\u2014except on one major issue. He wants kids. He keeps saying I\u2019ll \u201cchange my mind,\u201d but I\u2019ve told him again and again: I won\u2019t. We\u2019re barely making ends meet, and the thought of repeating the cycle of poverty terrifies me. I want to live for myself for once. But he doesn\u2019t seem to hear me, and that silence is starting to feel loud.<\/p>\n
Then came the puppy. He surprised me with it, hoping it would \u201cawaken my maternal instincts.\u201d I was stunned. A living creature shouldn\u2019t be used to manipulate someone\u2019s life choices. I\u2019m not anti-puppy, but I am anti-pressure. His gesture felt less like love and more like a test I never agreed to take. It wasn\u2019t romantic\u2014it was invasive.
