My dad raised me on his own, doing everything he could to set me up for success. He even paid for my pricey college tuition and covered all my expenses. I was so grateful for everything he did. But there was one big issue: I was so caught up in my studies that I couldn’t find a job, and the money I had wasn’t enough to visit him. My dad was just as busy with work, so we never got to see each other. For 6 years, we stayed connected through video calls. During that time, I met an amazing woman, and we had a beautiful daughter, but still, my dad and I only talked through the screen. One day, I couldn’t take the distance anymore and decided to surprise him with a visit, bringing my wife and his two-year-old granddaughter along.<\/p>\n
I booked the flights in secret, saving up every spare penny from my new entry-level job. When we finally pulled up to my childhood home, my heart sank. There were strangers sitting on the porch. A woman answered the door and told me they had bought the house almost five years ago.<\/p>\n
Panic set in. My dad had always called me from what looked like his familiar home office. Where was he?<\/p>\n
Frantic, I tracked down his current address through a distant family friend. It led us to a tiny, run-down apartment building on the edge of town. Right next door was a 24-hour diner. I walked in to ask the manager if they knew him, and there he was\u2014wiping down tables in a faded uniform, looking exhausted but still wearing that same gentle smile.<\/p>\n
