My wealthy in-laws were notoriously stingy \u2014 always “forgetting” their wallets at dinners. For MIL’s birthday, they invited my mom since my husband and I were abroad.<\/p>\n

I warned her. She just smiled. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ve got this.”<\/p>\n

So, on the b-day, they ordered lobster, wine, steak \u2014 then pulled their usual act.<\/p>\n

MIL: “Oh no, my WALLET!” FIL: “Mine’s in the car!” SIL: “Emergency call!”<\/p>\n

They ALL ditched my mom with the bill. But she smiled, ordered dessert and the most expensive wine… then calmly turned to the manager.<\/p>\n

She gestured toward the window where my in-laws were sitting in their luxury car, watching and waiting for her to panic.<\/p>\n

“My family has a strange sense of humor,” she told the manager. “They’re just sitting in the car to see if I’ll get flustered. Since my son-in-law’s father is a regular here, he told me to simply put the entire evening on his house tab\u2014including this bottle of vintage red\u2014and to add a 30% tip for the staff playing along.”<\/p>\n

The manager, recognizing the wealthy family’s vehicle, nodded professionally. “Of course, Madam. Please enjoy your dessert.”<\/p>\n
