Time seemed to stretch into agonizing hours. Through the narrow, six-inch gap beneath the heavy aluminum door, the frantic thrashing of the two figures was unmistakable. Muffled, desperate screams vibrated over the low mechanical hum of the garage motor.

Then, with a heavy thud, the door slammed completely shut.

I snapped my gaze back to the driveway. Mark was standing exactly where I had left him, but the panicked terror on his face had morphed into something entirely different. The color drained from his already pale, sweat-slicked face. His eyes, wide and manic, locked onto mine through the windshield.

He knew I’d seen.

“Hey!” he roared, his voice cracking as he lunged toward my car.

Adrenaline spiked through my veins like ice water. I slammed the shifter into reverse, my tires squealing against the asphalt. Mark was fast—far faster than any man recovering from a supposed massive heart attack should be. He threw his weight against the hood of my sedan, his fists pounding violently against the metal, his mouth forming words I couldn’t hear over the roar of my own engine.

I cranked the steering wheel hard, tearing backward onto the quiet suburban street and nearly clipping a brick mailbox. I threw the car into drive and floored the accelerator, watching in the rearview mirror as my brother shrank into the distance. He didn’t chase me. He just stood motionless in the middle of the road, staring after my fading taillights.

My hands were shaking so violently I dropped my phone twice before I could unlock it. I pulled over three blocks away, gasping for air, and dialed 911.

“911, what is your emergency?”

“My brother,” I choked out, my chest tight. “He… he has people tied up in his garage. You have to send someone. Right now.”

I gave the dispatcher the address and sat in my idling car, all the doors locked, my eyes darting to the rearview mirror every few seconds. The ugly inheritance dispute that had torn us apart a year ago—a bitter, venomous battle over our late father’s estate, which Mark swore I had manipulated out from under him—suddenly felt utterly trivial. I thought my brother was just greedy, bitter, and entitled. I never thought he was a monster.

Within five minutes, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet, overcast afternoon. Three cruisers blew past my parked car, taking the sharp turn onto Mark’s street. A morbid, terrifying compulsion drew me to put the car in gear and follow them at a safe distance.

When I slowly rolled around the corner, the police already had their weapons drawn. Mark was on his knees in the driveway, hands laced behind his head, the fight completely drained out of him. The garage door was wide open now, flooded with the harsh red and blue strobe lights of the cruisers.

Paramedics rushed the scene. From my vantage point across the street, I watched as they brought out the two victims. It was a man and a woman, battered, gagged, and exhausted, but alive. As the paramedics guided the shaking woman toward the back of the ambulance, the glare of a police flashlight caught her face. I recognized her instantly.

It was Sarah Evans. Our father’s estate lawyer.

A cold dread settled deep in my stomach. The “heart attack,” the paranoia, the hostility—it all made a sick, terrifying kind of sense. The dispute hadn’t ended for Mark when the judge banged his gavel. The loss of the money had mutated into a desperate, violent obsession.

As an officer shoved Mark into the back of a squad car, he turned his head and looked through the window, his eyes finding my car idling in the shadows across the street. There was no anger left in his gaze, no frantic panic. There was only the hollow, dead stare of a man who had finally crossed a line he could never uncross.

My foot slammed on the brake, the car jarring to a halt halfway into the street.
