Don’t change your pace. Don’t look back.

I forced my trembling hand to unlock my car door, sliding into the driver’s seat. I started the engine, put it in drive, and pulled away from the curb at a painfully normal speed. The second my car cleared the corner and dipped out of sight from Sarah’s house, I slammed on the brakes, threw the car into park, and grabbed my phone.

“911, what is your emergency?”

“There’s a man with a gun holding my friend hostage,” I choked out, rattling off her address. “He has a silencer. Please, you have to hurry.”

“Officers are on the way. Stay where you are,” the dispatcher instructed.

But I couldn’t just sit there. A silenced pistol wasn’t a tool for a robbery; it was a tool for an execution. By the time the police navigated the Friday evening traffic, Sarah could be dead.

I popped the trunk, grabbed the heavy steel tire iron from beside the spare, and sprinted through the overgrown alleyway that ran behind Sarah’s subdivision. We’d spent our childhoods hopping these fences. I knew every blind spot.

I vaulted over her back gate, landing silently on the damp grass. The patio door was ajar—a chilling sign, as Sarah was notoriously paranoid about locking up. Creeping into the kitchen, the familiar smell of her vanilla candles clashed violently with the metallic tang of adrenaline in the back of my throat.

From the living room, a low, menacing voice drifted over.

“I’m not asking again, Sarah. Where are the files?”

“I told you, I don’t have them! I mailed them!” Sarah’s voice cracked, thick with tears.

I peeked around the corner of the kitchen island. The man had her backed against the mantel, the barrel of the gun pressed under her chin. He was dressed in nondescript dark clothes, wearing gloves. A professional.

I needed a distraction, and I needed it immediately.

My eyes darted around and landed on the smart display sitting on the kitchen counter. Sarah and I shared a Spotify account. I pulled out my phone, connected to her living room speaker, selected a heavy metal track, and cranked the volume to maximum.

A deafening blast of electric guitars and screaming vocals ripped through the silent house.

The man flinched, instinctively turning his head and lowering the weapon toward the blaring speaker. That half-second was all I needed.

I lunged from the kitchen, bringing the heavy tire iron down with every ounce of strength I possessed, aiming right for his gun hand. A sickening crunch echoed beneath the heavy metal music, followed by a roar of pain. The pistol clattered across the hardwood floor.

“Run!” I screamed, grabbing Sarah’s arm.

The man lunged for us, catching the back of my jacket with his uninjured hand, but Sarah grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the mantel and smashed it into his temple. He stumbled backward, collapsing against the coffee table in a daze.

We didn’t look back. We bolted out the front door, sprinting down the driveway just as three police cruisers squealed onto the street, their lights painting the neighborhood in chaotic flashes of red and blue.

Hours later, wrapped in foil blankets in the back of an open ambulance, the adrenaline finally began to ebb, leaving us both violently shivering.

Sarah leaned her head against my shoulder. Slowly, she reached up and unclasped the silver locket she’d worn since we were teenagers. It didn’t hold a picture. Tucked inside was a tiny, encrypted micro-SD card.

“This was what I needed to tell you about,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackling police radios. “And this… this is just the beginning.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, loud enough that I feared the man behind the door could hear it.
