He was young, maybe barely out of his teens, and the sudden swarm of aggressive uniforms clearly terrified him. A burly officer with rain dripping heavily from his hat brim stomped over and rapped a heavy metal flashlight against the driver’s side glass.

The driver rolled it down, stuttering an apology. The officer wasn’t having it. He was belligerent, barking about a blown taillight that I knew perfectly well wasn’t blown, leaning into the window to intimidate the kid.

That was when I leaned forward.

My voice was calm, but firm. I told the officer to step back, lower his voice, and let the driver present his credentials. The cop stopped, his eyes locking onto me in the backseat. He sneered, throwing a derogatory comment at me to keep my mouth shut. When I didn’t look away, he lost his temper.

Before I could even blink, his hand shot through the open window. The crack of his palm against my cheek echoed like a gunshot in the confined space of the taxi.

My sister screamed. The driver froze, terrified.

I didn’t touch my face. I didn’t yell. I didn’t threaten him. I just stared at him, memorizing the sharp lines of his face and the silver text pinned to his chest: Miller. Badge #4482. He laughed with his partner, slapped the roof of the taxi, and dismissively waved us through the checkpoint.

I didn’t file a complaint that night. I didn’t call 911. I just went home, pressed a cold towel to my jaw, and waited for the sun to rise.

At exactly 8:05 AM, I made a single phone call to the captain of the 12th Precinct.

By 9:30 AM, Officer Miller was summoned to the precinct’s main conference room. He walked in with his chest puffed out, likely expecting a routine union meeting or a slap on the wrist for a noise complaint.

Instead, he found his Precinct Captain, the union rep, and me sitting at the head of the long oak table.

I wasn’t wearing jeans and sneakers anymore. I was in full dress uniform. The gold oak leaves of a Deputy Inspector for the Internal Affairs Bureau gleamed sharply under the fluorescent lights.

All the color drained from Miller’s face. He looked at my cheek, where a faint red mark was still visible, and then down at my collar. The air completely left his lungs. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

“Take a seat, Officer Miller,” I said, my voice just as calm as it had been in the back of the taxi. “We have a lot to talk about regarding your conduct at last night’s checkpoint.”

The badge he thought was an impenetrable shield for his arrogance was stripped from his chest before noon.

The Checkpoint Our driver tapped the brakes, his hands trembling against the steering wheel.
