Their father and I divorced 5 years ago after I learned he was cheating on me. He got her pregnant either right before he told me, and that was why he confessed, or right after. But our divorce was not an easy one.

He wanted to stay “friends” and I could not look at him after what he did. He and I were together for over 13 years, he was also a friend before he was my boyfriend/husband and to have him betray me like that and treat me as he had was awful. He married his affair partner. They had a daughter within months of our separation, followed by a son after the divorce/their marriage.

Last year they lost a baby which led to the discovery that his wife had cancer. What followed was a lot of fighting between the two of us again. He wanted me to help him and his wife out. He said their children (who are currently 5 and 3) needed family beyond just him and his wife. His own family disowned him for our divorce (they were extremely religious) and she has no family. I told him it would be over my dead body I would help.

He didn’t take my refusal well. He showed up unannounced at my front door a week later, practically demanding that I take his toddlers for the weekend so he could take his wife to her treatments. When I stood my ground, his desperation turned nasty.

“You’re going to let innocent kids suffer just because of your bruised ego?” he spat at me, his tone arrogant and completely devoid of the guilt he should have been carrying. He called me bitter and heartless, told me I was setting a terrible example for our sons, and stormed off to his car.

I didn’t argue. I simply shut the door, locked it, and initiated a period of absolute, stony silence. I blocked his number, communicating only through a co-parenting app and strictly regarding our two boys. For three weeks, things were eerily quiet. He stopped begging. He stopped showing up. When my boys went over for their scheduled weekend, they mentioned their dad seemed “really stressed” and was always on his phone, but otherwise, the storm seemed to have passed.

Then came Friday. My boys were supposed to go to his house for the weekend. Instead of my ex pulling into the driveway to pick them up, an Uber pulled up to my curb.

My 11-year-old walked up to the porch and handed me a crumpled envelope. “Dad wasn’t there when we got dropped off from school,” he said, looking confused. “Just his wife. She gave us this to give to you, and then she ordered us an Uber home.”

I ripped open the letter. It wasn’t from her. It was from him.

He wrote that the pressure of the cancer treatments, the screaming toddlers, and the crushing medical debt was too much for him to carry. He couldn’t handle watching another family fall apart. So, he packed a bag and left the state. He had emptied their joint bank accounts and vanished, abandoning the very woman he destroyed our marriage for right in the middle of her chemotherapy.

As I stood there staring at his cowardly confession, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an unknown number.

I answered, and a weak, trembling voice whispered through the speaker. It was her.

“Please,” she choked out, barely able to speak. “The toddlers are hungry, and I can’t get out of bed. He’s gone.”

I am a single mom of two boys ages 11 and 10.
