“I told him he doesn’t have to pretend anymore,” she whispered.<\/p>\n
I turned off the radio, giving her the silence she needed. “What do you mean, honey?”<\/p>\n
“He started making promises again,” she said, finally looking at me. “About summer trips and a new phone and how things would be different. And I just looked at him and realized… he\u2019s a guest. He\u2019s like a person I see at a party once a year. But when I got scared tonight because his friends were getting loud, I didn’t think to call him. I was standing five feet away from him, and I texted you.”<\/p>\n
She reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper\u2014an adult adoption application she\u2019d printed at the school library.<\/p>\n
“I told him I\u2019m tired of waiting for a ‘dad’ who only shows up when it\u2019s convenient. I told him I already have a father who picks up the phone at 11 PM on a Tuesday. I want your last name, Dad. I want to belong to the person who actually stayed.”<\/p>\n
