So it breaks me to share what he just endured at summer camp. Bullies stole his money, took his paintball wristband, told him he was ‘dumb’ and friendless, and made unthinkable threats against our family. Yet, through all that cruelty, my sweet boy still found a way to have a good time.

The Long Drive Home
When I pulled up to the gravel lot of Camp Evergreen on Friday afternoon, my stomach was already in knots. I had received a brief, guarded phone call from a camp counselor the night before, mentioning there had been an “interpersonal issue” in my son’s cabin, but that he was safe.

I expected to find him sitting on his duffel bag, head down, eager to escape. Instead, I saw him laughing. He was covered in dried mud, holding a jagged piece of quartz he’d found, and waving an enthusiastic goodbye to a younger boy waiting for his own parents.

It wasn’t until we were an hour down the highway, the camp safely in the rearview mirror, that the dam broke and the full truth spilled out.

The Stolen Joy
He told me how the week had started wonderfully, but by Tuesday, three older boys in his cabin had zeroed in on him. They noticed he was quiet. They noticed he was kind. To them, that was an invitation.

While he was in the shower, they rifled through his bag and took the $40 he had saved from mowing lawns—money he was so excited to spend at the camp trading post. The next day, they cornered him by the mess hall and physically tore the bright green paintball wristband off his arm, laughing as they told him he was too “dumb” to play anyway.

When he finally gathered the courage to ask for it back, the cruelty escalated. They told him no one at camp liked him. They told him he was entirely friendless. Then, leaning in close, they whispered violent, unthinkable threats about what they would do to our family if he dared report them to the counselors.

Hearing this as a parent, gripping the steering wheel, I felt a kind of rage and heartbreak that took the breath right out of my lungs. I asked him why he didn’t call me to come get him immediately.

His answer completely floored me.

A Heart of Gold
“Because if I left, they would win,” he said quietly, looking out the passenger window. “And I really wanted to learn how to canoe.”

While the bullies spent Thursday afternoon shooting paintballs at each other, my son didn’t sit in his bunk and cry. He walked down to the lake. There, he noticed an 8-year-old camper who was sitting alone on the dock, crying because he was homesick.

My 13-year-old—who had just been stripped of his money, his activities, and his sense of safety—sat down next to the little boy. He spent the next three hours teaching him how to skip stones across the water, telling him jokes, and helping him look for cool rocks along the shoreline. That younger boy was the same one I saw my son waving goodbye to in the parking lot.

By Friday morning, word had gotten out to a few other kids who felt marginalized by the cabin bullies. Without saying a word, they gravitated toward my son. They ate breakfast together. They teamed up for the final relay race.

“They took my wristband and my money,” my son told me as we finally pulled into our driveway, a small, resilient smile on his face. “But they couldn’t take my whole week. I still made a friend.”

I hugged him tighter than I ever have before. The world can be an incredibly cruel place, and as a parent, I can’t always protect him from the storms. But watching him step out of the car, battered but completely unbroken, I realized I don’t need to worry about him weathering the dark.

He makes his own light.

If you know my 13-year-old son, you know he has a heart of gold.
