“I heard you perfectly,” I said, my voice eerily calm. “Family only. I completely understand.”<\/p>\n
Before either of them could say another word, I tapped the screen and hit ‘Cancel Authorization’ on the massive venue deposit I had placed on my credit card. Then, I dialed the lead caterer, whom I had hired personally. He answered on the first ring.<\/p>\n
“Hi, Thomas. Yes, it’s me. There’s been a change of plans. Pack up the food and close the open bar immediately. The hosts will be taking over the bill from this point forward. If they can’t pay the remaining balance upfront, you have my full permission to shut it all down.”<\/p>\n
His wife’s smug expression instantly evaporated, replaced by a pale, wide-eyed panic. “Wait, what are you doing? You can’t do that! People are already inside!”<\/p>\n
“I just did,” I replied, slipping my phone back into my purse. “Since I’m not family, I certainly shouldn’t be paying for a family-only event. Enjoy the party.”<\/p>\n
I turned on my heel and walked back to my car. I didn’t rush. I walked with the peace of a woman who had finally recognized her own worth and was done being taken for granted.<\/p>\n
By the time I reached my house twenty minutes later, my screen was lighting up endlessly. Seven missed calls from my son.
