Zack stared at me, his face twisting in genuine confusion. “What are you talking about? I went to work. I came home. I never caused any drama!”<\/p>\n
“Exactly,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly, exhausted calm. “You did nothing. For thirty years, Zack. When I had pneumonia in ’06 and still had to cook Thanksgiving dinner for your family because you ‘didn’t know how the oven worked’? You did nothing. When our daughter begged for someone to help her with her college applications and you were too busy watching the game? You did nothing.”<\/p>\n
Zack opened his mouth, but the words seemed to die in his throat.<\/p>\n
“When I cried myself to sleep last year because my mother passed away and I felt completely alone managing the estate, you just rolled over and turned up the TV,” I continued, stepping toward the door. “You didn’t break our marriage with a single, explosive mistake, Zack. You starved it to death. A thousand tiny cuts of indifference.”<\/p>\n
He reached out a hand, his eyes wide and panicked as the reality finally pierced his comfortable bubble. “Kelly, please. I can change. I can do more.”<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s too late,” I said, picking up my suitcase. “You never cheated, but you never showed up, either. I am utterly exhausted from being married to a ghost. I wanted a partner, but all I got was a roommate who expected me to manage his entire existence. I want peace now. And since you’ve spent three decades proving you can’t be the former, I’m choosing the latter.”<\/p>\n
