“Please,” my mom begged, the tears spilling over now. “We’re his grandparents. Let us be a part of his life. Let us fix this.”<\/p>\n
I looked down at my sleeping son. I thought about the nights I spent crying in Eleanor\u2019s spare bedroom, terrified of the unknown. I thought about Eleanor co-signing my community college enrollment, teaching me how to budget, and holding my hand so tightly through every agonizing contraction that her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n
Then I looked back at the people who had thrown me away like an inconvenience when I needed them most.<\/p>\n
“He already has a grandmother,” I said, meeting my mother’s gaze without blinking. “And she didn’t need him to be convenient to love him.”<\/p>\n
I walked over to the front door and pulled it open wide. The afternoon sun spilled onto the porch.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s time for you to leave,” I told them. “You told me to get out by the weekend. I’m telling you to be off my porch by the end of the minute.”<\/p>\n
