“But before we get to individual promotions,” Arthur continued, “it is my distinct honor to introduce the architect of this merger. The silent investor who now owns a sixty-five percent majority stake in our company. Please give a warm welcome to our new Chairman of the Board, Ms. Elena Vance.”<\/p>\n
The boardroom erupted into polite applause. Richard, already grinning, began to clap\u2014until the name registered.<\/p>\n

Richard, I believe human resources and building security are currently waiting by your desk with a cardboard box. Your severance package\u2014or lack thereof\u2014will be mailed to your current residence.”<\/p>\n
The boardroom was dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the plush carpet.<\/p>\n
Chloe\u2019s crystal flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the floor and splashing champagne all over her designer heels. Richard opened his mouth to speak, to argue, to beg\u2014but no words came out. The golden ticket he thought he held had just turned to ash in his hands.<\/p>\n
