18. I lost my job because my boss wanted his mistress to have it. Then I discovered why she wanted it so badly.

My boss fired me so he could promote his mistress.

He didn’t even try to hide it.

At thirty-five, I was a single mother raising my eight-year-old daughter, Winnie.

No husband.

No parents.

No savings.

No safety net.

Just the two of us.

For eleven years, I had worked for the same company.

I had never been late.

Never missed a deadline.

Never called in sick when something important needed to be done.

When the company nearly lost its biggest client, I stayed in the office for three nights straight and saved the account.

When the accounting department made a million-dollar reporting mistake, I was the one who caught it.

And when my boss, Richard, needed someone to clean up his disasters, he always called me.

But apparently none of that mattered.

Because Richard had fallen in love with a woman named Vanessa.

She had been working at the company for less than a year.

She was beautiful, ambitious, and very obviously his favorite.

Everyone knew they were sleeping together.

Nobody said anything.

Then one Monday morning, Richard called me into his office.

Vanessa was already sitting there.

She was smiling.

I immediately knew something was wrong.

Richard pushed a folder toward me.

“We’re eliminating your position.”

I stared at him.

“My position?”

“Restructuring.”

“There’s no restructuring.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re being let go.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Then Richard said something I’ll never forget.

“Vanessa will be taking over your responsibilities.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe he was actually saying it.

“You’re firing me so you can give my job to your girlfriend?”

His face turned red.

“Watch yourself.”

I stood.

“I’ve worked here eleven years.”

“And you’ve been adequately compensated.”

“She’s been here eight months.”

“That’s enough.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She finally smiled.

It wasn’t an embarrassed smile.

It was a victorious one.

I picked up my purse.

“Fine.”

Richard seemed surprised.

“That’s it?”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You just made the biggest mistake of your career.”

He laughed.

“I doubt it.”

I walked out.

I made it all the way home before I broke.

Winnie was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

“Mommy?”

I smiled.

“How was school?”

She told me about a spelling test.

I nodded.

I asked about her lunch.

I listened.

I pretended everything was fine.

Then she went upstairs.

I closed the front door.

And collapsed onto the kitchen floor.

I cried until my chest hurt.

How was I going to pay rent?

How would I afford groceries?

What would happen to Winnie’s school?

I had $417 in my checking account.

Our rent was due in nine days.

That night, I barely slept.

The next morning, my phone rang.

Richard.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

His voice was completely different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Panic.

“Get to my office.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Immediately.”

“Why?”

“I can’t explain over the phone.”

“Richard, you fired me yesterday.”

“I know.”

“Then you can explain whatever this is to someone else.”

He lowered his voice.

“Please.”

That word stopped me.

Richard had never said please to me.

Not once.

I found someone to watch Winnie and drove to the office.

The receptionist looked terrified when I walked in.

People were whispering.

I went straight to Richard’s office.

He locked the door behind me.

Then he turned around.

He looked like a completely different man.

“Sit down.”

I remained standing.

“Why am I here?”

He opened his laptop.

“This morning, our auditors discovered something.”

“What?”

“Twenty-three million dollars is missing.”

My stomach dropped.

“What does that have to do with me?”

He pulled up a spreadsheet.

Then another.

Then another.

“This money was transferred through several departments over the last four years.”

“By whom?”

He looked at me.

“Your employee credentials.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The transactions were authorized under your login.”

I laughed in disbelief.

“I haven’t accessed those accounts in months.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“That’s why I’m scared.”

I looked at the screen.

Someone had used my credentials to move millions of dollars.

Then Richard said:

“The board is meeting this afternoon.”

“So?”

“They think you stole it.”

My heart sank.

“You fired me yesterday.”

“I know.”

“And now you’re calling me because you need someone to blame?”

“No.”

He looked directly at me.

“I’m calling because you’re the only person who can prove who actually did it.”

I stared at him.

“Why me?”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“You built the company’s internal security system.”

I nodded.

“And you were the only employee who knew about a hidden audit trail.”

I suddenly understood.

Years ago, I had created a secondary security system because I didn’t trust the company’s original software.

I had never told anyone about it.

Not even Richard.

Apparently someone had discovered it.

Richard handed me a USB drive.

“This was found in the server room.”

I plugged it into the computer.

A single folder appeared.

PROJECT WINNIE.

My blood ran cold.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

My house.

My car.

Winnie’s school.

Our grocery store.

Photos of Winnie walking home.

Photos of me leaving work.

My hands began shaking.

“What is this?”

Richard stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

Then another file opened automatically.

A video.

The footage showed Vanessa.

She was sitting in a hotel room.

Across from her was a man I’d never seen before.

He placed a folder on the table.

“You’ll get the promotion.”

Vanessa smiled.

“And the money?”

“Once the transfer is complete.”

Then the man said something that made my blood freeze.

“What about the woman?”

Vanessa shrugged.

“She’s irrelevant.”

“And the child?”

Vanessa smiled.

“She’s leverage.”

I slammed the laptop shut.

“Winnie.”

Richard grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

I pulled away.

“Who is that man?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who is Vanessa working for?”

“I don’t know.”

“And why do they have photographs of my daughter?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because you were never supposed to be fired.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The plan was to promote Vanessa and keep you here.”

“Why?”

“Because they needed access to your security system.”

I felt sick.

Richard continued.

“Someone inside the company has been stealing money for years.”

“And you knew?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I suspected.”

“Then why did you fire me?”

His eyes dropped.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.”

I stared at him.

“She knew about my affair.”

He admitted that Vanessa had been blackmailing him.

She told him that if he didn’t fire me and give her access to my department, she would expose their relationship and destroy his career.

So he chose me.

He sacrificed the one employee who had protected the company for eleven years.

But he had no idea what Vanessa was really after.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She stopped when she saw me.

For one second, neither of us moved.

Then she smiled.

“Well.”

Richard stood.

“Vanessa, leave.”

She laughed.

“You really think you can fix this?”

She looked at me.

“Do you know how easy it was to manipulate your precious boss?”

I said nothing.

She continued.

“All those years working late. All those passwords. All that access.”

She leaned closer.

“You made yourself indispensable.”

I looked at her.

“That’s why you needed me.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Exactly.”

Then she made her mistake.

She said:

“But you should have been more careful with your daughter.”

I quietly pressed the recording button on my phone.

Richard heard the click.

His eyes widened.

Vanessa didn’t notice.

“Who are you working for?” I asked.

She laughed.

“You’ll never know.”

I smiled.

“Actually, I think I already do.”

I opened the hidden audit trail.

There were hundreds of transfers.

Every fraudulent transaction.

Every altered file.

Every unauthorized login.

And they all led back to one company.

A private investment firm owned by Richard’s father.

Richard stared at the screen.

“My father?”

I nodded.

“Your father has been using this company to move stolen money for years.”

Richard looked horrified.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

I pointed at Vanessa.

“But she did.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Then she ran.

Security stopped her downstairs.

Police arrived twenty minutes later.

By the end of the day, the board had everything.

The money.

The transfers.

The recordings.

The surveillance files.

The blackmail.

And proof that Vanessa had been working with Richard’s father.

But there was one final surprise.

The company president called me into the boardroom.

He stood.

“I owe you an apology.”

I said nothing.

“We terminated the wrong employee.”

He offered me my job back.

I shook my head.

“I don’t want it.”

He looked surprised.

“What do you want?”

I thought about the eleven years I’d spent making other people rich.

Then I thought about Winnie.

“I want the position of Chief Security Officer.”

The room went silent.

“And I want complete authority over internal security.”

The president looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

“Done.”

Six months later, the investigation uncovered more than thirty million dollars in stolen funds.

Richard’s father was arrested.

Vanessa was sentenced for fraud, conspiracy, and blackmail.

Richard resigned.

And me?

I didn’t go back to being the woman who worked quietly in the corner while everyone else took credit.

I became the person everyone had to answer to.

My salary tripled.

My debts disappeared.

Winnie started at a better school.

And for the first time in years, I had savings.

But the thing I remember most happened much later.

One evening, Winnie was doing homework at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still sad about losing your old job?”

I smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

I looked at her.

“Because sometimes losing the wrong thing is how you finally find the right one.”

She smiled.

Then she went back to her homework.

I looked out the window.

Richard had fired me because he thought I was replaceable.

He thought Vanessa was more valuable.

He thought destroying my career would make me powerless.

Instead, he accidentally exposed the very conspiracy that had been hiding beneath his company for years.

And the woman he tried to throw away became the person who took control of everything.

He fired me to give his mistress my job.

By the time he begged me to come back, I owned the system that could destroy him.
