My mom passed away when I (26f) was 12. When I was 15, dad gave me all her stuff after his greedy ex tried to take some of mom’s things, which led to a huge fight and dad broke up with her. Dad’s sister wanted mom’s pearl necklace and even attempted to steal it. Dad told me mom wanted her things to go to me so he was following her wishes. After he gave it all to me I packed it up and sent it to my grandparents for safekeeping.
Then my dad met his fiancée when I was 17. We didn’t really connect and I moved out when I turned 18, that’s when they started having kids, two daughters (now 7 and 6).
Last week, Dad called me saying he needed to share “important news.” What he said stopped me cold. Turns out his fiancée had discovered old photos of my mother wearing the pearl necklace and decided it would be the “perfect” heirloom for their daughters. She had convinced my dad that since I had “so much” of my mother’s jewelry, it was only fair that I “share” the wealth with my half-sisters so they could feel included in the family history.
