โ€œWhen humor hides the truth ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€

Before I could get myself together and say something, my mother-in-law suddenly said, โ€œSon, you should be careful with jokes like that.โ€

The table went quiet.

My husband laughed again, like it was nothing. โ€œMom, relax. Iโ€™m just kidding.โ€

But she didnโ€™t laugh. She looked straight at him and said, โ€œNo, youโ€™re not. Thatโ€™s not funny, and you know it.โ€

Everyone at the table stopped eating. I could feel my face burning, and I still couldnโ€™t believe what he had just said about me.

She continued, โ€œI remember when you two found out about the pregnancy. She was terrified. She cried for days because she thought the implant failed and she didnโ€™t know what to do. You were the one who said youโ€™d figure it out together.โ€

My husband shifted in his chair.

โ€œAnd now,โ€ she said calmly, โ€œyouโ€™re sitting here acting like she tricked you? Thatโ€™s not fair to her.โ€

No one said a word. Even his dad looked uncomfortable.

My husband tried to brush it off again. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it like that.โ€

But the damage was already done. Everyone had heard it. Everyone knew.

For the rest of the dinner, the mood was awkward and quiet. I barely spoke, and he avoided looking at me.

On the drive home, he finally said, โ€œYouโ€™re not still upset about that, are you? It was just a joke.โ€

I looked out the window for a moment before answering.

โ€œA joke is supposed to be funny,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œBut you just told your whole family you think I trapped you with our child.โ€

He didnโ€™t have anything to say after that.

And for the first time in a long time, I started wondering if he had been thinking that all these yearsโ€ฆ and if the joke had actually been the truth he was finally brave enough to say out loud.
