โMy girlfriend told me to dress nice for dinner.
When I got there, I realized something was off.
Her entire family was already sitting at the table.
No one told me it was a โcelebration.โ
And when the check arrived, everyone turned to look at me.โ
At first, I thought they were joking.
Her dad leaned back in his chair, smiling politely.
Her mom folded her hands on the table.
Her two brothers watched me like they were waiting for a show.
My girlfriend slid the bill toward me.
โYouโve got it, right?โ she said with a small laugh.
I looked down.
The total made my eyebrows lift.
$623.
I slowly looked back up at everyone.
โThatโsโฆ a big dinner,โ I said carefully.
Her older brother chuckled. โWell, itโs not every day we celebrate something this important.โ
I frowned. โCelebrate what?โ
My girlfriend blinked like she couldnโt believe I asked.
โOur future,โ she said.
Her mom leaned forward excitedly.
โYes! When our daughter told us youโve been saving money and doing so well at work, we thought it would be the perfect time to meet properly.โ
My stomach dropped.
Saving money?
I had mentioned that once โ casually โ weeks ago.
Her dad nodded approvingly.
โA man who can provide is rare these days,โ he said. โWeโre glad she chose someone responsible.โ
Suddenly everything made sense.
The expensive restaurant.
The huge orders.
The bottles of wine.
They werenโt celebrating.
They were testing me.
My girlfriend nudged the bill closer again.
โGo on,โ she whispered. โDonโt make this awkward.โ
For a moment, the whole table went quiet.
I stared at the receipt.
Then I slowly stood up.
Her younger brother raised an eyebrow.
โYou going to the ATM?โ
I shook my head.
โNo,โ I said calmly.
I reached into my wallet and pulled out enough cash for my meal.
I placed it on the table.
Everyone watched.
Confused.
Then I slid the bill back to the center of the table.
โIโm happy to pay for what I ordered,โ I said.
Her momโs smile faded.
My girlfriend stared at me.
โWhat are you doing?โ she whispered sharply.
I looked at her.
โYou didnโt invite me to dinner,โ I said. โYou invited me to an audition.โ
Her dad frowned.
โThatโs not what this is.โ
โReally?โ I replied. โBecause nobody told me this was a family celebration. And nobody asked if I was comfortable paying for ten people.โ
Silence filled the table.
My girlfriend crossed her arms.
โYouโre embarrassing me.โ
I sighed.
โNo,โ I said quietly. โYou did that when you set this up.โ
I pushed my chair back.
Then I looked around the table one last time.
โGood luck with the celebration.โ
And I walked out of the restaurant.
Behind me, I heard whispers start immediately.
But I didnโt stop.
Because if someone invites you to dinner just to see how much youโll payโฆ
theyโre not looking for a partner.
Theyโre looking for a wallet.
And I wasnโt going to play that role.
